Thoughts On... Wearing Makeup

Hi everyone! Sorry I failed at the whole 'posting everyday in February thing' - I have a good excuse for not posting Tuesday and Wednesday though! Tuesday ended up being a lot busier than I planned it to be and on Wednesday I genuinely just forgot all about posting... (Ok maybe that second excuse wasn't so good but anyway, I'm going to try again!)

Today's ramble post is kind of leading on from last week's post about acne and it is about my thoughts on wearing makeup.

I started wearing makeup when I was 14 years old. I didn't really know how to do anything with makeup so on most days I just wore foundation, concealer, powder and mascara really. I used to ask my mum to do my eyeshadow on big days like Christmas or when I was going to parties because I could never do it right. I always ended up looking like I'd been punched in both eyes. For my 16th birthday, my mum paid for me to get a makeup lesson from a professional makeup artist. She introduced me to bronzer, blusher, eyeliner, highlighter, eyebrow products and, the skill that changed my life, how to do eyeshadow.

Everybody has their own reasons for wearing makeup. For some, it's to cover spots or skin problems, like I talked about last week. For others, it's a way to make themselves feel more confident. For a few, it's a creative outlet and an art form. For me, it has been a combination of all three of these reasons. It started out as a way to cover my skin and therefore make me feel more confident, but then, especially after my makeup lesson 3 years ago, it genuinely became a hobby. I love experimenting with new eyeshadow combinations, new lipstick colours, new makeup products, and I genuinely really enjoy doing my makeup in the morning.

I don't judge anyone who wears makeup or anyone who doesn't wear makeup. My sister doesn't wear makeup ever, simply because she's not interested in it. Some of my friends don't wear makeup on a daily basis simply because they see it as a chore and therefore can't be bothered to do it everyday and will instead only do it for nights out and parties. I completely understand that. If you don't enjoy doing something or can't be bothered, then don't. I don't wear makeup everyday - some days I wake up and just want to spend the 20 minutes or whatever that I would spend doing my makeup in bed. It's completely normal!

I do, however, think it's important, as with anything in life, that you do it for yourself and nobody else. Wear it to make yourself feel more confident, not just to conform to social norms or because you feel like you should. Wear it because you are interested in it and enjoy doing it, not because your friends do.

I know some people don't agree with wearing makeup to make yourself feel more confident but I don't get the problem. If I can do something that makes me hold my head just that little bit higher when I'm walking down the street, why wouldn't I? It's not to impress other people, it's to make myself feel good. So what's the issue?

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on the topic!

Music Mondays #1 | February 2018

Happy Monday everyone!

I don't know if anyone remembers, but I used to do a series on my blog called 'Top 5 Tunesday' which was basically on the first Tuesday of every month I would write my most listened-to songs of the previous month.

I really enjoyed writing those posts and people seemed to enjoy reading them, so I've decided to bring it back but in a different way. I'm going to start out with the first Monday of every month (with the exception of February since I'll be doing it weekly) and see how it goes. But basically I'll give you my favourite songs of the previous month (or week!) but it won't necessarily be 5 - it may be 12, it may be 3, who knows! I hope you like these posts and that they are helpful in terms of people finding new songs/artists to listen to.

So, without further ado, here are my favourite songs of last week...

'A Million Dreams' and 'Rewrite the Stars' from The Greatest Showman soundtrack

As I mentioned in my Weekly Round-Up yesterday, I went to see 'The Greatest Showman' on Friday and I absolutely loved it. I've had the album on repeat literally since I left the cinema. I absolutely adore every song for a different reason and it has taken me a while to pick my favourite and I couldn't decide between 2 so I'll go with both.

'A Million Dreams' is such a beautiful song about ambition and love. I love how the song has the progression from young to older PT Barnum, still in love with the same girl. It just gives me such a warm feeling and honestly I can identify the idea of not being able to sleep from ideas and dreams running around at lightening pace in my pace.

'Rewrite the Stars' is such a beautiful love song sung by Zac Efron and Zendaya's characters in the movie. The story behind it is that the 2 characters are in love but believe they can't be together because they are from two completely different social classes - Zendaya's character is a trapeze artist in the circus while Zac's is a wealthy upper-class actor. This scene in the movie was breathtaking. The whole staging and choreography was just beautiful.

'Inside Out' by Camila Cabello

I love Camila's album and, like with The Greatest Showman soundtrack, I struggled to pick a favourite (and people say I'm indecisive?!). In the end, I realised this is the one I always go to when I don't have time to listen to the whole album. It's fun and upbeat and it has Spanish in it, so of course it's right up my street! I think Camila is doing such a great job with her solo career and can't wait to see what she has in store next.

'Sorry Not Sorry' by Demi Lovato

I've been loving this song lately simply due to the sass levels in it. It's such a good song to listen to just walking down the street because I'm not kidding, you stop walking - you STRUT. It'd be such a good breakup song to help get over someone. I'm also loving Demi's new sound - 'You Don't Do It For Me Anymore' is another good tune.

What songs have you been listening to this week? :)

Weekly Round-Up #1 | February 2018

Thursday 1st February
This morning I went with my mum to pick up my granny and then the 3 of us went shopping for an hour or so. I left them to it and went to meet my friend Grainne for lunch. We went to 3 caf├ęs which were all bunged so we admitted defeat and went to her house and ordered burritos instead (it was such a good shout - they were amazing!!). I had such a lovely afternoon/evening catching up with her! We managed to 'watch' 14 episodes on Friends in the whole time I was at her house!

Friday 2nd February
This afternoon, my mum and I went for lunch and then went to the cinema to see 'The Greatest Showman'. I had been wanting to see this movie for over a month and I was so glad I finally had the opportunity to go and it certainly did not disappoint! I absolutely loved the storyline, the message behind it, the music, the choreography... I've had the soundtrack on repeat all day everyday since Friday! I can't wait until it comes out on DVD so I can watch it over and over again!

Afterwards, we went and collected my siblings from school and did a few jobs. That evening I packed for going back to Bath in the morning and we got an Indian takeaway which was fabbb!

Saturday 3rd February
This morning I flew back to Bristol and got the bus to Bath, arriving at my house mid-afternoon. I spent the afternoon unpacking and then had dinner with one of my housemates and another friend, which was a lovely way to kick off being back for Semester 2.

Sunday 4th February
I've had a very chilled day today. I allowed myself a wee lie in to recover from my early start yesterday and then I just did quite mundane things like washing, food shopping and reading for my classes tomorrow. My 3 other housemates came back this evening and I just spent the evening catching up with them, which was nice.

(I am aware that these few days have not been particularly interesting but from tomorrow it will be more interesting since I'll be back in class! I promise!) I hope you all have had a lovely beginning to February!

Storytime: The Time a Sheep Chased Me Around My Kitchen

I've decided throughout February, since I'm aiming to post everyday, I would make a bit of a schedule to keep it all on track:
Monday = Music Mondays - where I talk about my most listened-to songs of the week just passed
Tuesday = Beauty posts
Wednesday = University-related posts
Thursday = Thoughts On... (such as Thursday's post on acne and bad skin)
Friday = Favourites
Saturday = Story times - as a different way for you guys to get to know a few obscure things about me and my life
Sunday = Weekly Round-Up - what I got up to during the week

So today's story time is, as you can tell from the title, about the time I was chased around my kitchen by a sheep when I was about 8.

My family's holiday home in another part of Ireland is in a little development of 16 semidetached houses. The house next door to us kept a sheep tied to a pole in the garden as a way to keep their lawn short without having to constantly mow it.

One day, said sheep managed to break free from the rope, and so was roaming freely in the garden, which me and my siblings noticed from my bedroom. We decided to go and tell our neighbour to make sure that she was aware her sheep was roaming free. So as we got closer to her front door, the sheep saw us coming and started running towards us. (I mean when I say running, it was a sheep run so not very fast).

When I saw this sheep coming for us I screamed and ran the other direction, back towards our house and of course the sheep followed. What I stupidly forgot to do, however, was close the front door behind me when I ran inside, so of course the sheep came right in, still chasing me. (I don't know why it was fascinated with me, it did nothing to my brother and sister!!) My logic was to just keep running and I ended up running in circles around our kitchen table screaming and crying with this sheep doing the exact same thing behind me.

I then decided to run into the utility room and made the first smart decision I'd made all day: I closed the door behind me (hallelujah!). My parents came downstairs to see the utility room door closed with me screaming from the other side of the door and a sheep standing in the kitchen. Some sight that must have been. They managed to coax the sheep outside and brought it back to its house and explained what happened to our neighbour, who was very apologetic about the whole thing.

I was absolutely terrified at the time but I find it so hilarious now. But yeah you can't blame me for having a slight fear of sheep that are roaming about freely.

My Favourite Movies

La La Land
This is my all-time favourite movie. It's the movie I watch when I'm sad, when I'm stressed, when I'm angry, when I'm happy, when I'm excited... I've seen it so many times now that I've completely lost count. I love literally everything about it - the music that makes me emotional every time I hear it, the cast including 2 of my favourite actors, and most of all the beautiful cinematography. The ending breaks my heart every time but I absolutely looove those last few scenes. They are one of the most beautiful pieces of cinematography I have ever seen. Aahh I can't even express how much I love this film!!

Love, Rosie
This film rips my heart out, jumps on it (multiple times), rips it up, before putting it all back together. I can't even explain why it's one of my favourites - I just love the storyline and it's another movie that I can watch over and over and never get sick of.

Legally Blonde
This movie makes me laugh, it makes me cry and it makes me so happy to be a girl because it shows just how awesome we are. I love the message behind it that you can do anything you set your mind to, no matter how people tell you you'll never make it. Elle Woods honestly inspired younger me so much and it's still one of my favourite movies. I absolutely love the classic bend and snap scene!

My Guilty Pleasure Movies - These are movies that I love which at my age I shouldn't really be watching never mind enjoying but suuure you're only as old as you feel, right?!

  • Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging

  • Enchanted

  • High School Musical

Have you seen/do you love any of these movies? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
